Thoughts of a colored man premiere8/21/2023 The Tonys will still be presented on June 12. In recent weeks, Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker of Plaza Suite, Laurence Fishburne of American Buffalo, Ramin Karimloo of Funny Girl, Daniel Craig of Macbeth and several company members of Paradise Square and A Strange Loop were out of their respective shows. Many shows have had to postpone inviting nominators because cast members have been sidelined and their understudies and standbys have gone on. The delay was approved because of the high number of COVID cases affected several Tony-eligible shows. The announcement will be made live on the Tony’s YouTube channel by Tony winner Adrienne Warren ( Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) and three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry ( Carousel, Violet, The Scottsboro Boys). The candidates for the Tonys will now be given out on May 9 instead of May 3. In other news, both the nomination announcement dates for the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards have been pushed back. A sequel to Nguyen’s Vietgone, the play follows a family of Vietnamese immigrants settling in Arkansas. In the spring of 2023, Qui Nguyen’s Poor Yella Rednecks, will open at City Center Stage I. Summer, 1976 by Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn ( Proof), about the unlikely relationship between independent artist Diana and young housewife Alice, will play at City Center’s Stage II. Jeff Augustin’s Where the Mountain Meets the Sea which will play MTC’s City Center Stage I in the fall, focuses on the son of a Haitian immigrant who recreates his dad’s Miami-to-California trek in reverse. MTC has also announced three productions for its 2022-23 Off-Broadway season but with no specific dates announced. Jo Bonney, the original director, will also return for the Broadway version. Greg Mozgala, who has cerebral palsy and Katy Sullivan who was born a bilateral transfemoral amputee and is missing both legs, will recreate their roles from the 2017 production. The play, which debuted at the Williamstown Theater Festival in 2016 and had its NYC premiere at MTC’s Off-Broadway City Center space in 2017, deals with four characters facing challenges ranging from physical disability to unemployment.
